What is EMDR?
EMDR is a specialised therapy that helps people heal from the emotional pain and distress caused by traumatic or deeply upsetting experiences. It is particularly well-known and scientifically validated treatment for conditions like PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), anxiety, and other issues that stem from past trauma. EMDR It is an ideal tool for working directly with your neural pathways and can be used in place of or alongside traditional talking therapy.
As an Integrative Psychotherapist, I will often propose and discuss using EMDR with clients who think that it might be helpful, in combination with other therapeutic approaches. Some clients prefer to work almost exclusively with EMDR processes; it really depends on how you prefer to process your issues, and we will work together collaboratively to find the approaches that suit you best
How Does It Work?
EMDR focuses on changing how your brain processes traumatic memories. During an EMDR session, you’ll be guided to recall a distressing memory while simultaneously focusing on a specific external stimulus, which can either involve moving your eyes back and forth, through following my hand movements or through yourself tapping alternately on either side of your body. This process, known as bilateral stimulation, helps your brain reprocess the memory so that it no longer feels as overwhelming or distressing.
Over time, this reprocessing can help you view the memory in a new, less distressing way, reducing its emotional impact and allowing you to move forward with greater peace of mind.
Why Choose EMDR?
EMDR is supported by extensive research and is recognized as an effective treatment for trauma by organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Many people find that EMDR offers relief faster than traditional therapy methods, often in just a few sessions.
